"You better come on in my kitchen" - Robert Johnson
So let's talk food. I'm not going to lie-food is one of the main reasons I love going on trips so much. It's not just the food though: it is the whole dining experience. I especially like places that relate the atmosphere to a certain theme or culture within the town. I'm not one that likes to go eat at O'Charley's or Olive Garden when I'm on a trip. I want something local or that "I can't get at home." Therefore, Hunter and I made sure to dive into some restaurants that we couldn't visit in Tuscaloosa.
Our first night in Nashville, we at dinner at Dick's Last Resort. Let me begin this with saying that this place isn't for everyone! We went here because we had a coupon for a free appetizer with the purchase of an adult entree. Yes, it has a fun, laid back atmosphere, but if you had to give a it a rating, you would definitely say this place needs at least a PG-13.
A man was standing outside of the restaurant when we walked up. He was nice to us and told us to come on in. However, we heard him speaking to other people walking by, and he wasn't as nice. This wasn't him just being rude though, this is the atmosphere of the restaurant. They call it "service with sass"- and it's just that. Our waitress just dropped our silverware in front of us and actually hit us in the face with the menus. Don't try to carry on a normal conversation with the wait staff, they will definitely give you an attitude back. Hunter was not amused!
The food was good though. We ordered the BBQ nachos. This was a great choice! The nachos were topped with BBQ pulled pork, BBQ sauce, melted cheese, tomatoes, jalapenos, and sour cream. We really enjoyed these. We also ordered the steak and shrimp with french fries. We got a nice-sized steak and 4 grilled shrimp. The steak was good. As of quality, I would say it was like something you would get from O'Charleys or Longhorn. Not a high quality steak, but it was good. They do have good margaritas. I ordered the Killa Rita. Hunter and I were both able to keep our cups, so that was a nice souvenir. All in all, the food was good, but this just isn't our type of restaurant. If you don't like somewhat vulgar messages written on paper and then you being forced to wear the message as a hat, this is definitely not the place for you, or your kids. However, if your kids can't read, then this place is great because they can make a mess, and it's perfectly ok.
On Saturday, we grabbed a late lunch at Barlines located next to the Country Music Hall of Fame and on the bottom floor of the Omni Hotel. Barlines must also be a Predator's fan favorite or local favorite because many Predators fans were eating here before the game. In regards to decor, the restaurant was nicely decorated and very clean. We enjoyed our lunch while listening to a two person band. The stage is rather small, but for this place, it works.
The menu items include your hamburgers, pizza, salads, etc., but it's not your typical burgers, pizzas, and salads. The table behind us ordered deviled eggs for an appetizer. Those were the best looking deviled eggs I've ever seen. They were filled with all sort of ingredients. For my lunch, I ordered the BBQ shrimp pizza. It was a hand-tossed crust with salsa verde, shredded cheese, BBQ shrimp, white BBQ sauce, topped with jalapenos and tomatoes. The shrimp were full-sized shrimp, so there was one per slice. It was definitely different, but I really enjoyed it. Hunter ordered a hamburger that was topped with a fried egg and a fried green tomato. It looked messy, and it looked good. He really liked it. For his side, he ordered sweet potato waffle fries. I may have stolen a few, and they may have been pretty good. I believe we may go back to Barlines on our next trip to Nashville.
Before the Gabriel Iglesias show started, we decided to go to B.B. King's Blues Club and Wildhorse. One reason we went to these two places is because Greekformals.com sends groups there when they want to go to Nashville. The second reason we went to these places is because we knew they would have some type of music playing. We went to B.B. King's first. Even though we just ordered something to drink and no food, everyone else's food looked incredible. We loved the atmosphere. Now, we were there around 4PM, so it was still early for the night scene, but we loved the laid-back jazz and blues atmosphere. The walls were lined with famous blues artist. We even got to enjoy a blues band for a little while. The band was very interactive with the crowd, that made them even better.
After leaving B.B. King's, we went to Wildhorse for a little bit. This place is rather large. There are 3 stories overlooking the dance floor and stage. The top 2 stories have spots that are used to host private events. We sat at a high top table close to the back on the first floor. Even though we were far away from the stage, the speakers and television screens that projected the singer on stage did not make you feel like you were in a bad spot. Again, we just ordered a drink and no food. Menu selections looked good, and our drinks were good. Just to sit and relax, or to go back later at night to dance, we would go back to Wildhorse on our next trip.
For our final meal in Nashville on Sunday, we decided to go to the Aquarium. This place is family and adult friendly. As you walk in, there is an aquarium to the right, and then an aquarium that you walk under to go sit at your table. In the middle of this restaurant is a huge circular aquarium that everyone can see while eating. As Hunter said, he liked this because he could eat and have some entertainment. The prices were a little on the high side, but I would say that it was worth it. For an appetizer, we ordered the shrimp and crab dip. It was delicious! They serve the dip to you in a hot bowl, and you have toasted French bread pieces to eat it with. For our entrees, Hunter ordered grilled shrimp and mahi mahi. I ordered stuffed shrimp that had crab meat, jalapenos, and bacon in the stuffing. Both of our meals were served with rice and vegetables. I was surprised at how good the food was. Normally, places like this do well in one thing and lack in the food. Both the experience and food was worth the visit. The Aquarium was probably our favorite restaurant of the trip.
Our most expensive meal was at the Aquarium. Our least expensive meal was at Barlines, and that was because we ordered drinks at Dick's. Overall, we were pleased with the restaurants that we visited, but we are looking forward to trying different places on our next visit.
